The best piece in this weekend's English-language travel sections may very well have been Andrew Westoll's Big Trip feature in the Guardian on Saturday. It's a fascinating narrative of getting off the beaten path in Surinam's Brownsberg nature reserve. Westoll, who wrote a recently released book on Surinam, predicts that the former Dutch colony will soon be a fullblown ecotourist hotspot.
Surinam is not the easiest place to reach from North America. Surinam Airways offers Miami-Paramaribo and Aruba-Paramaribo roundtrip fares. Doing a cursory search, I found fares for the former at $621 and for the latter at $401. Caribbean Airlines flies to Paramaribo from New York via Trinidad, with quite lengthy layovers. My research turned up a roundtrip fare for travel next month for $697.
